The Contractor's Google Business Profile Playbook (2026 Edition)

Your GBP outranks your website for local search. Here's the 12-step checklist restoration and service pros should run every month.

Your Google Business Profile does more for local leads than your website ever will. If you own a service business and you're not treating GBP as a monthly discipline, you're leaving 30–50% of your inbound calls on the table.

The monthly 12-step checklist

  1. Primary category — pick the highest-intent match ("Water damage restoration service" beats "Contractor").
  2. Secondary categories — add every service you actually perform (up to 9).
  3. Services list — every service gets a description with your target keyword.
  4. Products — even service businesses can list equipment/packages as products; more surface area, more clicks.
  5. Weekly Post — Google downranks stale profiles. Even a photo of a completed job counts.
  6. 10 photos per month minimum — geotagged from the job site.
  7. Q&A seeding — post the 5 questions you get every day and answer them yourself.
  8. Review velocity — ask every closed customer within 48 hours; volume beats age.
  9. Owner responses within 24h — Google's algorithm reads response time.
  10. UTM tag your website link to see what GBP actually drives in analytics.
  11. Verify service areas — list every city and county, not just your HQ.
  12. Attributes — set every relevant one (emergency service, licensed, insured, etc.).

The single lever most contractors miss

Photo geotags. When you upload a photo taken at the job site, the EXIF location tells Google you actually served that address. Do this weekly in the neighborhoods you want to rank in, and you'll move up the Map Pack in 60–90 days.

What to stop doing

  • Stop keyword-stuffing your business name (Google will suspend you).
  • Stop asking for reviews via templated text blasts (they get flagged).
  • Stop ignoring negative reviews; a calm, factual response actually raises trust.
