The 15-item checklist
Exterior: clean gutters and downspouts. Trim tree limbs within 10 feet of the roof. Have dead or leaning trees professionally assessed. Check for missing or cupped shingles. Reseal cracked caulk around windows and doors. Verify downspouts discharge 5+ feet from the foundation.
Attic and roof: look for daylight or water stains. Verify vents are clear and screened. Check that bathroom exhaust fans vent outside, not into the attic.
Interior: test sump pump. Verify basement window wells drain. Move valuables off basement floors.
Insurance: review your policy for wind/hail deductibles (often 1-5% of Coverage A separately). Photo/video walkthrough of every room. Save your insurer's claim phone number.
Before a severe weather warning
Bring in patio furniture. Charge phones and battery banks. Fill bathtubs if a tornado is warned. Know your safe room.
After
Safety first. Photograph before cleanup. Call restoration for emergency board-up. Call your insurer. Get a Xactimate estimate.
